Norma Prendergast (Dublin, 1968) is a photographer and audiovisual artist who has lived in Brussels since 1988.

Guided by a literary approach combining documentary and ‘mise en scène’, she uses the medium of photography as a way of connecting with the world and the people around her. She pays particular attention to portraiture and to the poetry and memory of places.

Alongside her more intimate projects, she has initiated a number of participatory projects in her neighbourhood of Anderlecht. In these projects, residents become the protagonists of multidisciplinary scenarios devised together, combining photography, video, sound and performance.

Norma has taken part in group exhibitions at Espace Contretype, La Médiatine, Art Confiné Temporaire, Komplot, Festival Système D, La semaine du son, Bruxelles 2020 and 2021, Le Centre Culturel, Namur, Les Brasseurs, Liège, the Biennale de la photographie, Condroz, Belgium and Festival Voies off, Arles, France. Solo exhibitions at Recyclart, Zinnema, De Rinck, Escale du Nord and Tour et Taxis, Brussels. An extract of her sound work produced during the confinement in 2020 is available for public listening at the archives of the city of Brussels.

She is interested in all aspects of collaboration and performance. She studied percussion at the Muziek academie in Anderlecht and continues to deepen her passion for sound, experimental and improvised music through workshops: Alec Ilyine ‘From sound to music’ 2017 – 2018, Will Guthrie gamelan ensemble, 2019 and Seijiro Murayama.
